The Duchess of Bedford, is credited as the creator of afternoon teatime. She invited friends to join her for an additional afternoon meal at five o'clock in her rooms at Belvoir Castle. The menu centered around small cakes, bread and butter sandwiches, assorted sweets,and, of course, tea. In the 19th century high tea came about as a meal for the working family. Lunch was the main meal of the day. High tea occurred between 5 and 7PM because illumination was via candle light and the meal had to take place before dark.
